Prize to the best footballer of the year in Europe

Prize to the best footballer of the year in Europe – football award established in 2011. The prize will be awarded to a footballer who, according to UEFA journalists, was the best in the past European season (starting from the 2010/2011 season).

The prize can be given to players, regardless of nationality, who spent the previous season in the European club. In determining the best football player of the year, both internal games (Championship, Cup, League Cup, Super Cup) and external games (European Cups, World Club Championship), as well as matches for the national team will be counted.

The election of the winner will be held in two stages. At first, each of the UEFA journalists (53 journalists in total, from each UEFA member country) will select three of the best. The player who takes the first place will receive 5 points, the second – 3, the third – 1. Three players who have scored the most points will be finalists. Later at the UEFA meeting, all journalists will vote and choose the best.

The name of the first winner was announced on August 25, 2011 in Monaco. They became Argentine Lionel Messi, acting in the Spanish Barcelona.
