Art systems in clothing design
Designers of garments are engaged in the creation of clothing of a wide range of diverse purposes and appearance, which necessitates a different approach to design and modeling.
The main requirement for suit as a product of design activity, is that models must possess not only utilitarian signs but also aesthetic , i.e. to represent artistic value. A costume as a product of design becomes an artwork when it possesses the main feature of the art system – composition.
Art system (from the Greek. Systema – a whole made up of parts; a compound) is a set of interconnected elements that form a certain integrity, unity. The artistic system has an internal (content) and external (formal) unity. She as system responds functional and design requirements.
The process of designing new models of clothes implies the designer’s understanding of the differences in artistic systems.
This article presents the options of art systems, selected on the basis of the increasing degree of complexity of design work.
Model – This is a sample, a single product of clothing, shoes, hats, type, brand of any product. Often, a model is a model that serves as a benchmark for serial production of clothing.
Family – a group of products, which are based on a single structural basis (drawings of the main parts of the product – shelves, backs, sleeves). The development of a family of models as an approach is used primarily in industrial production.
By changing only additional details (collars, valves, decor elements, materials), it is possible to ensure fast turnover of models in the process flow. This allows you to diversify the range of products. The main time expenditures fall on the development of design documentation (construction of drawings, modeling, development of patterns and gradations of basic structural details). This approach allows to reduce the time for the development and implementation of new models in production.
Headset – several items of costume of the same style and usually made from the same material. For example, a set of underwear, home wear. Or – a certain bag is offered for certain shoes, a scarf for a hat, etc. The development of costume items in the form of a headset is a modern design approach that allows you to stimulate consumer interest in products. It is not easy to resist the temptation to purchase, for example, shoes and not get the perfect bag for her or gloves.
Kit – a complete set of clothes constituting suit . Selection of several products into a complete unit. The kit may consist of a dress and coat, costume and coat, coat and headdress. The set, in contrast to the ensemble, is a set of objects, possibly not connected by stylistic unity, but united for the sake of some purpose, utilitarian purpose of the costume. They can be combined in color. Sometimes the kit is part of an ensemble.
For the promotion of new models on the market, the kit acquires another meaning. A feature of all fashion brands is a wide range of products. Up to twenty themes for all collections can be presented at the same time in the boutique’s sales area. Demand for certain topics may depend on changes in weather and holidays. To maintain the interest of customers in the trading floor, re-timing is carried out (reissue of the trading floor) at least once a week. In the design of the sales area includes mannequins, which are formed sets of clothing and accessories in the form total look. Total look is a set (sometimes ensemble) of clothes, expressing the style, image and idea of the collection. This is a set of clothing items that you can wear at the same time. As a rule, total look is formed within the same theme of the collection and is initially conceived by brand designers. Total look shows customers how to wear the clothes of this collection theme, the brand designer’s vision. To create Total look by yourself it is necessary to follow the laws of costume composition, i.e., take into account proportions, color combinations , highlight the main point, place accents, use means of expression ( contrast, rhythm , nuance , symmetry, asymmetry, etc.).
Ensemble (fr ensemble – whole, collection; set, set; suit; together, immediately, at the same time) – in fashion means a combination of clothes and objects that complement it, selected as a single artistic whole.
Until the second half of the 50s of the last century, this term was used only in the narrow sense of “headsets” in cases where it was a harmonious selection of a set consisting of clothes, shoes, headgear and other additions connected by one common artistic idea. This sense of the word “ensemble” has now, but since now clothes are more differentiated depending on their purpose and addressee, this term is usually used with clarifying definitions. For example, a festive, elegant ensemble – a set of clothes, shoes, jewelry and other additions that allow a person to create an artistic image corresponding to this situation. The main thing in the ensemble – consistency of a suit and a certain person. It is the ensemble that the designer creates to display models and promote a new image.
Collection – several models of clothing for various purposes (from 5-7 items of clothing for beginning fashion designers to 60-80 models for famous fashion designers), which are combined with a certain idea, correspond to a certain theme, often have a similar color scheme and are created for a certain season (spring-summer or autumn winter). The author’s designer collection and the collection of a particular Fashion House or company, which can be created by several designers, differ. Collections can be created for two main lines – Haute couture and ready-to-wear

Term "Haute couture" (haute couture) literally translated from French means "high sewing". Nowadays, under him understand the creation of clothes of the highest class and is usually translated as "high-fashion".
Collections ready-to-wear created by famous craftsmen for the purpose of replication for sale (from fr. pret-a-porter – ready to wear). There are four groups of models of ready-made clothes: • a series of luxury (circulation of 4-5 copies); • a series of high quality (circulation of 100-200 pieces); • classic series – high quality products, but mass production; • a category of large series that does not have standard restrictions.
